Last Friday, my class and I visited the “shade” in Vienna. A guide introduced us to the shady world of drugs. It is a sensitive topic. Which – at the same time – is getting more and more important at our ages. We were divided in two groups, each one with their own guide. Our guide told us that he had made a lot of experiences with drugs himself. And he told us that even though some seem to be good but in reality, they are all bad.
His first contact with drugs was at home. There he got stressed by all the ongoing arguments between his parents. He couldn’t sleep any more. He drank lots of alcohol to be able to fall asleep. From that point on he started taking drugs. He drank with his friends more and more. In the end he even needed a few beers before work.
As he worked in a restaurant with hard-working conditions, another employee offered him cocaine. With this, he felt he could work better and didn't get exhausted. After the inebriation, he gets very tired and can’t work anymore.
After some time, the drugs destroyed his daily routine, and he tried a new start. He changed his job, found new friends and after three therapies with loads of relapses and drawbacks he finally made it. He lives a normal life with no illegal drugs.
Some other drugs he took are marijuana and ecstasy. But until now he hasn't stopped smoking.
After telling us his story, he showed us lots of drugs with all their problems. He said that the most dangerous thing is when other poisonous substances are mixed into the drug. At some parties or festivals, there are checkpoints where scientists check drugs if you want this. Finally, he showed us the biggest hotspots of drugs a few years ago – the Karlsplatz. Now the city of Vienna has turned this place into an area for relaxing and walking. But – as a negative side effect – the drug hotspots have now spread all over Vienna, which makes it more difficult for the police to spot them.
I am glad that I could take part in this tour and I will take all the advice to heart for my future.
