On Tuesday we went to Croke park after school. Croke park is the fourth-largest stadium in Europe and is as big as approximately one and a half soccer courts. At the start of our visit we went to the locker room. There were a lot of shirts from different districts on display and it was really nice to look at.
Our tour guide told us that the GAA players are very superstitious and each one of them has different rituals before the matches. Then we went to the lounge in this room, the players from both teams gather. The losing team enters the lounge first and welcomes the winners with a round of applause. On the ceiling of this room, there is a big chandelier in the shape of the different balls used in Gaelic Sports. The chandelier always takes on the colours of the participating teams and is surrounded by mirrors to make it appear that there are more than one chandelier.
Then we went to the stands and our tour guide explained to us that the teams only play for their villages, do not play for money and never change teams. Then we went to the rooms where press conferences take place and the tour guide explained to us who the stadium was named after. After that, we went to the top of the stadium and it was explained to us that one side of the stand was only built so small so that the residents could get sunlight.
At the end of the tour we had the chance to try Hurling and Gaelic football, I even scored a “goal” on the first try. In the evening we went bowling everyone had fun and loved it. We would definitely recommend it and would do it again.
